TOPIC: Silikon' - 1000 For PMMA?

The paper from the Israeli Dr. reported multiple injections over several months 4-6 injections 1 month apart. Average gain reported at 2.7cm. Assuming this is valid data I'm wondering if this could be a feasible approach where the end result may be aesthetically better than larger injections of PMMA... Certainly more work (travel time/expenses etc) but if the end result was more controllable then may be worth it assuming a permanent filler was the choice. Any Thoughts?

I say this also assuming the long terms risks from PMMA and Silkon are exactly the same...

Do you know any more about the possibility of dissolving the silicone with the injection of another substance? Has this ever been done?

One reason why I am still hestitant re: PMMA is bc if there ever was a problem, it would be so hard to get it out of you. If silicone can be dissolved, that would be a big plus in terms of reassurance

Hoddle - do you have any links about it being used in Israel?

I know there is a prominent Israeli Urologist who frequently weighs in on penis enlargement (against it mostly - Vardi i think his name is), so i'd be interested to hear if he's had any opinion about it.

It was used in Israel for penis enlargement. A study was done and the results were good.

This is how Dr. Joseph answered a question on another board about the safety profile of Silikon-1000 in his facial plastic surgery practice and how he handles adverse reactions to it:
Around 3% of patients will develop a nodule or bump at the site of injection. These typically respond well to dilute triamcinolone injections; rarely they need to be excised.
So the substance he uses to dissolve the silicone is triamcinolone. I wonder, though, if there might be a relatively small window of time during which the silicone could successfully be dissolved, after which it would have to be removed surgically.
I actually have an appointment with Dr. Joseph next week to discuss possible Silikon-1000 injections for fixing a couple of irregularities to the bridge of my nose resulting from an old break. I'll ask him about the time for dissolving the silicone and report back.

I never heard back from Dr Yacobi...but I did find an Israeli press article about a scandal he was involved in. The automatic translation isn't so good, but basically it seems that the study in the original article was not conducted according to ethical rules. However, the Israeli medical establishment won't come out and condemn the results of the study, and some doctors there appear to support him. Basically he did the silicon injections in his private practice (not the public hospital where he is listed in the paper) and he charged patients for the procedure (which is apparently unethical in research). Also the silicone he used was originally only intended for use in the eye. All a bit sketchy, but the scandal seems to be much more linked to the way the research was conducted, rather than its results. So I'm still curious. Here is the translation:

ttar2380: Yes, the silicone oil Dr. Yacobi used is the German name for a purified, medical grade injectable silicone called Silikon - 1000 in the U.S. and approved by the FDA for injection in the eye to treat retinal detachment. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists have been using Silikon - 1000 off-label for a number of years as a facial cosmetic filler. I learned about the stuff from the New Jersey plastic surgeon's web site that I referenced in the first post in this thread.
Big Meat: Unlike other cosmetic fillers, Silikon - 1000 is permanent.
Based on Dr. Yacobi's study write-up, he uses a microdroplet injection technique and only injects a small amount of silicone per session. That protocol is in keeping with the protocols I've read of U.S. plastic surgeons and dermatologists who use Silikon - 1000 in their practices. Their use of it is somewhat controversial, both because it is off-label and because some docs argue that there can be late rejection of the stuff (years or a decade or more after it is injected), but the docs using it for more than ten years counter that they have not experienced cases of late rejection and that overall rejection/reaction is less than 3% of patients, which can usually be handled by dissolving the stuff with injections of some other substance. These same docs also argue that the negative connotations of silicone injections are based on old cases where non-medical grade silicone was injected in large amounts in one go by amateurs and hacks.

If there was a effective way to dissolve it then it would have already blown all other cosmetic fillers out of the water. Why would anyone have a temporary filler if they could have something permanent instead, that can be removed if needed?
It's the same with FFT. Often surgeons claim to treat the fat in some special way which means it wont reabsorb and many guys believe it. But if a Dr could really get fat to stay permanently on a consistent basis, then he's have created the holy grail of cosmetic surgery - a soft tissue filler that is safe and permanent!
