No. Ellanse is not PMMA. Ellanse is composed of polycaprolactone, PCL for short. Ellanse is made up of microspheres, like PMMA, but the difference is that the PCL microspheres are slowly absorbed. Depending on the version of Ellanse you get, the S, M, or L, the duration, or how long it lasts, is anywhere from one to four years. This is different from PMMA, as polymethylmethacrylate spheres are never absorbed. Both Ellanse and PMMA work by stimulating collagen. However, Ellanse is not permanent and PMMA is a permanent filler. Hope that helps. This may relate to the biostimulatory response triggered by the presence of these microspheres (PMMA-like in function, though Ellansé’s PCL spheres are bioresorbable), resulting in a collagen response that proved more durable than initially anticipated. The jury is still out on Ellansé’s true long-term longevity across tissues, but if there’s any silver lining, it appears to be favorable for penile applications... perhaps less so in other applications like the face, where reversibility and predictability tend to matter a bit more... PMMA is not available in Europe to my knowledge following the discontinuation of Metacrill. Whether any leftover stock still exists (I have no information regarding expiration or shelf-life), Ellansé would arguably be the closest non-permanent analogue currently available. That said, many patients report notably long retention with Ellansé, which may help explain why FDA approval in the U.S. has proven challenging -- since if you can’t tell a patient with certainty how long it will last, you may end up with a host of issues on your hands (except for penile patients, I’d imagine ?, and this is complete speculation on my part).
